The official process
Step by step, with no nasty surprises
Here's the study permit example. Your agent guides you through every step; the details vary with your destination and your goal.
1
Admission or job offer
Get an admission letter from a designated learning institution (DLI), or an offer from a Canadian employer for a work permit.
2
Provincial attestation (PAL/TAL)
Required for most students (college, undergraduate). In Quebec, it's the CAQ instead. Your institution applies for it on your behalf.
Master's and doctoral students at public institutions: exempt since January 1, 2026.
3
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your costs: 22 895 $ CA for a single applicant (outside Quebec), on top of your first year of tuition and travel.
Threshold in effect since September 1, 2025; it's reviewed every year by IRCC.
4
Application to IRCC
Create your account, upload your documents and pay the fees online: study permit 150 $ + biometrics 85 $ CA.
The Student Direct Stream (SDS) was discontinued in November 2024: everyone now goes through the regular stream.
5
Biometrics & medical exam
Fingerprints and photo (valid for 10 years). A medical exam may be required depending on your country and if your stay is longer than 6 months.
6
Decision & arrival
Once approved from abroad, you receive an introduction letter; your permit is issued when you arrive at the Canadian port of entry.
